The Rutsville Incident Pt5-5 Sphinx looked at the terrified shopkeep. “We can end this once and for all: No more living in fear.” Otis shook his head. “You make it sound so simple. You think we haven’t tried before?”“Have you tried destroying the radio tower? Because I suspect that’s how they’re controlled.” Otis paused as if his mind was latching onto Sphinx’s statement. “N-no. But I want no part of it: No part! I have a family.”He started to move away. “I have to do what’s best for us.” Maddie scowled. “Damnit Otis! Do you want to keep living in the threat of this deranged scientist?” “At least we’re living!” he shouted as he bolted for it. Tex started to go after him but Sphinx stopped him. “Let him go, he’s just scared. Let’s get out of here and...” There was a crashing noise as Maddie used her newly pilfered hatchet to smash open part of the counter. “Is that necessary?” Webster grumbled.“Yup,” Maddie replied as she placed a few sticks of dynamite on the counter. “It’s where he keeps the dynamite. Oh, right, we need blasting caps too.”The woman rummaged around a bit more. “If you’re right about that radio tower we’re going to need something with force, thankfully Otis keeps a supply for the loggers.” The team all hit the deck as one of the windows was suddenly blown out and a bullet impacted the wall. “This is the Sheriff! Come out peaceful-like, now!” Sphinx high-crawled towards one of the buildings and hazarded a peek. He could see the Sheriff with a shotgun and a worried, younger man in a similar uniform armed with a rifle next to him. More alarming were the revenants shambling outside towards the door. Sphinx went back down. “That didn’t take long,” the young pilot grumbled. “Head out back,” Tex drawled. “I’ll make some noise.” Sphinx started to raise an objection but Tex held up his hand. “Don’t worry about me Cap: I can handle these polecats.” To emphasize his point Tex fired his carbine, and quickly worked the lever. Sphinx gave a nod to Tex. “No dying, that’s an order.” Tex guffawed as he fired again. as Webster, Sphinx, and Maddie charged out the back. A revenant shambled towards the trio but Sphinx wasted no time leveling his shotgun and firing. The gun kicked back hard against Sphinx’s thin frame but he bore the pain. The group ran on as Maddie spotted a flatbed truck. “I can hotwire it! Just give me some cover!” “Bloody hell, what sort of reporter are you?” Webster yelped.“I didn’t get called Mad Maddie for nothing!” the plucky woman replied. Sphinx and Webster leapt into the bed of the truck, bracing their longguns against the wooden railings of the flatbed. Webster’s rifle cracked and a revenant that was noticeably dragging its foot fell back.Sphinx and Webster fired and changed positions as Maddie tinkered away in the truck cab.“Anytime now, sister!” Sphinx shouted as a revenant lunged onto the truck bed, the shotgun belched flame and buckshot - the creature practically disintegrating at such close range. “I’m working on it!” Maddie shouted before the engine suddenly coughed to life. The woman quickly worked the gear shift and the truck lurched forward and bowled a revenant over with a sickening crunch. Maddie gunned the throttle as Sphinx and Webster held on for dear life. The truck rolled past more lurching figures, working its way up the rough dirt road where the lair lay. Sphinx took the time to load fresh shells into his pilfered gun as a thought came to him. Quickly he rapped on the roof of the truck cab and Maddie slowed to a stop and popped the clutch. She looked out the window towards the two.“What? You want to ride inside?” Sphinx shook his head. “No, I think we need to plan a bit more.” “We blow up the tower, isn’t that the plan?” Webster asked. “Yes. But we’re going to be going into the den of where these… things come from. We have no way of knowing how many there are. If we’re lucky the doctor is running out, or they’re prowling elsewhere. If we’re not, they’re likely all gathered around the estate at the top.” The two waited for him to continue. “We’ll continue up but if we run into more of those things. I’ll be one big loud distraction and hopefully draw some attention away from the two of you.” Webster fished his pipe out and chomped on the stim as he spoke around it, “You’re taking quite the risk, old boy.” “What else is new?” Sphinx countered. Webster raised a brow. He was about to say something profound in his mind, but settled on: “Alright, can’t argue with that.” Maddie continued the drive up the winding path, slowly and cautiously. Not only did the group have the revenants to worry about, but the dark winding road was treacherous at night. A mistake could send them all plummeting down the hill. The journey passed in silence, Sphinx feeling fatigue beginning to set in as the adrenaline that had kept him going seemed to fade. He roused himself as he kept himself occupied by inspecting his weapons. The flatbed finally reached the top of the hill and to no one’s surprise the familiar ragged contenances of revenants greeted them. Maddie slammed her foot on the peda and the truck bowled over a few before the woman reversed as the Revanants lumbered towards the truck. “Remember: Just like we discussed, I’ll draw them off!” Sphinx shouted as he leapt from the flatbed. No sooner had his feet touched the ground that his shotgun fired. The buckshot blasted a hole through a gangly creature that had once been an elderly woman. The creature slumped the receiver destroyed from the blast. Maddie backed the truck up and switched the lights up as Sphinx made all the noise he could, whatever commands the creatures followed seemed to make them overly focused on one task. Webster held his rifle and resisted the urge to pick off targets, hating every second he didn’t. Not helping went against everything he believed in, it just wasn’t right. Sphinx fired and ran, doing all he could to draw attention to himself, and even though his heart pounded in his chest he didn’t let that fear show. He shouted insults at his foes as he fired and relocated his head constantly looking for new threats. Sphinx whirled as he caught movement in his peripheral, he saw a large revenant in overalls lunging for him. The pilot stepped back and fired, his barrel was lower than he intended and the creature was suddenly without knees as it fell forward. Unperturbed, it began to crawl towards him. Sphinx wasn’t going to waste ammo killing it, he could easily avoid the crawling creature, he dashed past a gaggle of revenants tripping over each other to get at him and swung the butt of his gun into one that had gotten too close for comfort. The revenant merely staggered from the blow, but a blast from the gun and the creature was no more. Sphinx fished for more shells and grimaced as he realized he was out; he made his last few count as he moved towards the manor house drawing his trusty M1911. Back at the truck Maddie watched the crowd of shambling horrors chase after the daring young aviator, leaving a good number of them broken and dead upon the ground. “Damn,” Maddie shook her head.“Come, on. Let’s blow the tower already!” Webster grumbled. “You got it.” Maddie replied as she drove towards the imposing radio tower. Back at the town, the winds had picked up - blowing through the town with a shrill whistle. Sheriff Brady and his one deputy crouched behind the rusted tractor that lay outside the general store. The gunfire had fallen silent finally, none of the revenants remained. “Do you think we got him?” the deputy asked a notable quaver in his voice. “Quiet boy,” The sheriff grumbled. “Move in, see if he’s done for.” The deputy hesitantly looked at the general store, the broken windows and smashed door, the bullet holes riddling the walls and the many corpses of revenants. “I uh, don’t think so,” the deputy swallowed. “Move!” the sheriff ordered. His deputy started forward before dropping his rifle and running for it. “Get back here, you miserable coward!” the sheriff shouted as he raised his shotgun and squeezed the trigger with a dry click. the sheriff swore as his deputy disappeared around a house. With a huff of disgust the sheriff dropped his empty shotgun. “So, you’d shoot a man in the back?” Tex’s voice drawled. The sheriff turned his hand to his holstered revolver. Tex stood facing him in the street, his hand just hovering over his holstered Colt. “You,” the sheriff growled. “Yep,” Tex replied simply. The sheriff stared him down, “This ain’t a western novel son. Them days are done.” Tex raised a brow. “Are they? Cause it seems I’m facing down a crooked skunk of a sheriff in the middle of the street.” A tin can blown by the wind rolled across the street between the two men as they glowered at one another. The two drew their pistols, the sheriff hoping having a double action would make up for his slower reaction times compared to Tex with his single action. The night erupted into gunfire as Tex fired the heavy slug hitting Brady through the sternum, his body jerked as his revolver fired, the shot going wide and missing Tex. Brady hit the ground knees first before pitching forward with a ragged gasp. Tex watched impassively before he gave his revolver a twirl and holstered it. Seeing no more threats, Tex looked up towards the hill. “Aw, hell. That’s going to be a long hike.” *Sphinx was still on the move - he had to keep in motion. Fire and move, stay evasive, just like a dogfight. He slid a fresh magazine into his pistol, the barrel warm from all the shooting he’d done. He crouched near the terrace of the house as the Revenants closed in on him. Sphinx fired, aiming where he thought would best neutralize the threats. The creature’s fell, they twitched, and then were still. A few more shots, before he turned towards the door and to his surprise the door actually opened. Sphinx entered and immediately looked around for something to brace against the door.He could find nothing but there was a lock that he slid in place. It’d slow them down at least, already he could hear limbs pounding against the door. He moved away; pistol leveled as his booted feet scuffed across the carpet as he trudged down the hall. A door ahead of him immediately flew open and a large burly revenant in a once-fine suit, charged him.“Of course they’re inside too, why not?” Sphinx fired as the butler charged him. He managed to drop the creature just as his slide locked back on empty. But another revenant was charging in, this one seemed to be a maid. Sphinx cursed as he drew his .38 as the creature sprinted for him and fired, once, twice, and then the creature was no more. Sphinx heard the door crash and he sighed, his chest heaving in exertion. “Webster! Maddie! Hurry up and blow that tower!” He moved on and found himself in a foyer. More revenants all dressed in household roles and all focussed on him. Sphinx emptied his revolver before he drew his knife and waded in, shouting his defiance as he slashed and stabbed. But though he drew great wounds the revenants shambled on and grasped for him. Sphinx weaved through and stabbed into the spots with the receivers embedded in them. He repeated the trick at least twice more, and even severed a receiver with a well-placed knife slash before he found himself dogpiled beneath the smelly creatures. Maddie and Webster had driven right below the radio tower, Webster keeping his rifle at the ready. “Right, just give me a moment to set the charges,” Maddie said as she fiddled with the dynamite she’d pilfered. “I say, do hurry.” Webster called. Maddie scoffed. “This isn’t exactly something you want rushed.” Webster’s rifle cracked. Maddie looked to see figures charging them. “Oh, got it. Working faster!” Webster carefully worked the bolt of the rifle as Maddie fiddled with the dynamite. She found herself fumbling with the more intricate steps as she worked, taking a deep breath to steady herself and trying to ignore the loud gunfire going on right next to her. Webster quickly shoved more bullets into his rifle with a stripper clip. “How many of these bloody things are there?” He yelled, gripping his rifle as he fired quickly. A revenant closed in and Webster bashed it aside with his rifle and fired, but another set of hands wrenched the rifle away from him. “Damn!” Webster cursed as he stepped back, quickly he drew and fired the revolver. Maddie finished her work and looked up with a scream as a revenant was standing right over her. Scooting back she pulled the pistol from where she had set it and pulled the trigger. Nothing happened. “Safety!” she said to herself as she fiddled with the safety before it clicked off and she screamed and fired wildly at the same time. The revenant took the .32 bullets and kept coming until one hit something vital and it pitched forward. Maddie blinked amazed at what she had done before she realized she was still next to live dynamite. “We’ve got to go - Now!” Maddie shouted to Webster, nearly overwhelmed with the creatures. “Quite right!” Webster shouted. *The pair of hulking revenants dragged a bruised and bloodied Sphinx into the lab. Doctor Gabriel, dressed in his labcoat and leather apron turned and scowled at his ‘guest’. “Captain Sphinx, I presume? If that’s even your real name.” Sphinx smiled despite his lip being bloodied, “Dr. Herbert West I presume?” Doctor Gabriel made a disgusted sound. “How childish. No my name is Doctor Gabriel. And you have caused me a lot of trouble young man. So many of my creations destroyed.” Sphinx raised a brow. “Why’d you make them in the first place? What gave you the idea to put a radio receiver into someone’s nervous system?” The scientists pursed his lips, torn between wanting to finally be rid of Sphinx and finally having someone to explain the process to.“I see you have some degree of intelligence at least.” “I read Popular Mechanics,” Sphinx replied. Gabriel adjusted his glasses. “Yes, well. You are correct they follow basic commands and instructions transmitted by my radio tower. Radio waves have much more potential than broadcasting music and news, and fanciful stories.” “But why make these things?” Sphinx asked. Doctor Gabriel raised a brow, his mind going through a myriad list of justifications for his work - any reason other than just because he could - yet none he seemed able to say out loud. Finally he settled on something.“Think of what they could do. A workforce that can work tirelessly, an army that will not question orders, servants that require no pay or sustenance. The prisons of the world could be empty, their inmates repurposed to better society as a whole. The tramps and hobos no longer a parasite on this depression-ridden nation.” Sphinx looked from one revenant to the next, “Turn them into these? You are out of your mind.” Gabriel threw his hands up. “I see. You are just like all the rest.” “If no one else agrees with you, shouldn’t that tell you something, mac?” Sphinx countered. Gabriel chewed his lip, “I think I shall find a better use for you.” He turned to one of his revanants and pointed to a surgical table. “Prepare him!” *SHProooooooSH!*A shockwave. Windows in the manor shattered after a deafening explosion. The revenants holding Sphinx suddenly went limp and fell to the ground. “No,” doctor Gabriel shouted. “What have you done?” Sphinx cracked his neck. “Took them long enough.” Doctor Gabriel ran for it. “No you don’t.” Sphinx shouted as he gave chase. The pilot caught up to the scientist quickly and tackled him. The man fell, his hand knocking a cart of instruments over. The doctor squirmed against Sphinx as his hand grabbed a scalpel, he flailed about and caught the younger man in the arm with the blade. Sphinx stood up and moved back as the doctor scrambled to his feet, scalpel in hand. Sphinx took a ready stance as he and the doctor circled one another. Sphinx’s eyes shifted and the doctor moved in. As the doctor closed in, Sphinx snatched up a metal tray that he used as a shield to deflect the clumsy stab of his foe; he then retaliated by bashing the tray against the scientist's face. Gabriel stumbled back as Sphinx bashed him again and again with the tray. The doctor shook his head as he glowered at the aviator. Once again he went in for the attack only for the tray to strike his wrist and send the scalpel tumbling from his grasp. Sphinx growled as he gave the doctor a kick to the torso that sent him careening back. The doctor fell against an electrical coil, there was a loud buzzing noise as sparks flew and the Doctor let out a horrid scream as he was electrocuted, the air growing pungent. Sphinx recoiled as he saw the man electrified alive before the machine shorted out and the scientist fell to the floor in a twitching mess. Hesitantly Sphinx drew closer. Smoke was thick in the air as the machine was still sparking. The pilot nudged the scientist with his boot and was satisfied when he didn’t stir. *The group had recovered the component the revenants had stolen from their planes. The sun was rising and the group trudged down the hill as the manor was on fire. They had agreed that whatever the doctor was working on was probably best left destroyed, just in case someone else wanted to replicate his work. None of them said a word to each other; they were all too exhausted from the fights and flights of the night. When they got to Rutsville proper a small group of citizens were waiting for them, looking upon them with shocked countenances. Sphinx sighed. “What now?” Maddie spoke up. “It’s done. No more vanishings, no more mad scientist. We don’t have to live in fear anymore.”The gathered townspeople were silent before Otis spoke up. “What now? We’ve lived with this shadow for so long, and there’s so few of us left.”“We move on,” Maddie stated, “Maybe start venturing out again.”Sphinx spoke next. “I’d advise coming up with a cover story for what happened here.”Maddie nodded. “Leave that to me.” Sphinx looked at the rest of the Misfits. “I don’t know about you two, but I’m ready to fly out of here.”Webster, his British stoicism cracked with a weary smile, nodded. "Indeed, I believe a spot of tea is in order, but preferably somewhere far less... eventful."The townspeople, their faces etched with the trials they'd endured, slowly began to murmur amongst themselves. Hope, it seemed, was a hardy plant, sprouting even in the desolation left in the wake of terror. They gathered closer, their expressions softening as they looked at the group who had fought so fiercely for their lives, their sanity, and their town.Otis stepped forward, extending a hand that bore the calluses of hard work and the recent grip of fear. "Thank you," he said simply, his voice hoarse but firm. "For everything."Sphinx took the offered hand, the firm shake a silent covenant between them. "Just doing what needed to be done," he replied. As the group prepared to leave, the sun broke fully over the horizon, casting a golden glow over the remnants of the night's horrors. The warmth seemed to seep into their bones, a balm to the chill of death they'd danced with so intimately.

A rushed icon idea just because I felt like an update for the group would be nice.
Of course the quality gets reduced to atoms because deviant art believes the icon quality needs to be pixel bite sized.
It's like the never ending hunger when eating pizza bites. Anyways baii~ *Disappears into the shadows again*
